How to Find Your 1999 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1999 Cadillac Background Info

The 1999 Cadillac Vibe

1999 was a year of identity crisis for Cadillac. They were trying to convince us that the Catera could "zig" like a sports car while the rest of the fleet-the DeVilles and Eldorados-remained the undisputed kings of the American boulevard. This was the peak of the "Champagne Era," where Light Bronze Mist Metallic reigned supreme in country club parking lots. Our database focuses on the four survivors that defined the year: that iconic bronze, classic Black, crisp White, and the high-maintenance showstopper, Red Pearl Tricoat. If you're driving one of these today, you're piloting a plush time capsule from the dawn of the Y2K era.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to The Peeling Era. By 1999, the industry had fully committed to the Basecoat/Clearcoat system, but the chemistry hadn't quite perfected the "long-term marriage" between the layers. If your Cadillac has spent any significant time in the sun, you're likely seeing "Delamination"-that's a fancy painter's term for the clear coat lifting off like a bad sunburn. Once the UV protection in that top layer fails, the clear becomes brittle and begins to flake away in sheets, leaving the base coat underneath exposed and defenseless. On these 90s GM bodies, the hood, roof, and trunk are the first to surrender.

Restoration Tip

In this era, a small chip is never just a chip-it's an invitation for the clear coat to start lifting. Seal chips immediately. If you see a silver-dollar-sized area where the paint looks "milky" or is starting to flake, you need to stop the spread before the delamination travels across the entire panel. For those of you rocking the Red Pearl Tricoat, remember that this is a three-stage process. You aren't just matching a color; you're building depth with a translucent middle layer. Don't try to rush it or "blob" it on; thin, patient layers are the only way to replicate that factory glow without it looking like a blotchy repair.
