How to Find Your 1952 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

The 1952 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 1952-the year of the "Blue Flame" six and enough chrome to blind a low-flying pilot. Whether you were piloting a top-of-the-line Bel Air or a hardworking Styleline Deluxe, Chevrolet wanted you to be seen. We've got 10 colors in the vault for this year, and let me tell you, Chevy wasn't shy about variety. They were moving away from those "war-effort grays" and leaning hard into the optimism of the fifties. You had the choice of making a statement with Bright Red or playing it smooth with that iconic two-tone look using India Ivory over Emerald Green or Surf Green. It was a time when your car didn't just get you to work; it told the neighbors you'd officially "arrived."

Paint Health Check

Now, let's talk shop. In '52, we were firmly in the Single Stage Era. Your Chevy left the factory wearing either "Duco" nitrocellulose lacquer or "Du-Lux" alkyd enamel. There's no clear coat here to save you. This paint is "live"-it breathes, it ages, and it sure as hell oxidizes. If your Campus Cream or Woodland Green looks more like a chalkboard than a car, that's the pigment literally dying on the surface. Without a clear shield, the sun treats this paint like a free buffet. If you don't feed it wax regularly, the finish turns into a chalky, hazy ghost of its former self. It's a bulletproof look, but the maintenance is a marriage, not a first date.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up an original 1952 finish, remember: It needs wax or it dies. If you're dealing with heavy oxidation on colors like Saddle Brown or Driftwood Gray, don't just start sanding. Try a non-abrasive polishing glaze first to see if you can "hydrate" that old single-stage pigment. When you do repair a chip, don't go looking for a clear coat to put over it-you'll end up with a "halo" effect that looks like a bad DIY job. Use a high-quality single-stage paint that matches the original density, build your layers slowly, and once it's cured, seal it with a heavy carnauba wax to keep the oxygen from eating your hard work.
