How to Find Your 1956 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1956 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1956 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to the peak of the Tri-Five era, where the 1956 Chevrolet All Models lineup turned every suburban driveway into an Easter basket. This was the year Chevy went "Jet Age," adding those hooded headlights and massive chrome spears that begged for a two-tone split. We're tracking 25 distinct colors in our database for '56, and let me tell you, they weren't shy. Whether it was a Bel Air sport coupe dripping in Dusk Plum Metallic over India Ivory, or a Nomad in Tropical Turquoise, these cars were designed to be seen from three blocks away. This wasn't just transportation; it was a 3,500-pound fashion statement.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '56, the factory was shooting nitrocellulose and early acrylic lacquers that were as beautiful as they were temperamental. The problem? This paint is "open-pored" and never truly stops drying out. If your Chevy has been sitting, you've likely met the "Chalky Ghost"-that white, hazy oxidation that makes Matador Red look like a dusty pink. Even worse, those "Metalli-Chrome" finishes like Sierra Gold used actual aluminum flakes. When the binder breaks down, those flakes oxidize and turn black, or worse, you'll rub right through the thin pigment trying to find a shine that isn't there anymore.

Restoration Tip

If you're lucky enough to have original paint, or you're spraying our period-correct solvent-based match, remember the Golden Rule of the fifties: It needs wax or it dies. Because there's no clear coat to shield the pigment, the sun is literally eating your color every second it's outdoors. You need to "feed" this paint. Use a high-quality carnauba wax to seal those pores and create a mechanical barrier against the air. If you're buffing out old oxidation, go slow-if your buffing pad matches the color of the car, you're removing the car's very soul. Clean it, shine it, and then seal it like your life depends on it.
