How to Find Your 1962 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1962 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1962 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 1962, where the "Jet-Smooth" ride was the law of the land and the Impala was the undisputed king of the boulevard. If you were sitting in a showroom back then, you weren't just picking a car; you were picking a personality from a massive 40-color menu. Whether you were hauling lumber in a Truck painted in Omaha Orange or cruising for shakes in an Impala draped in Honduras Maroon Poly or Anniversary Gold Poly, Chevy made sure you didn't blend into the scenery. This was the peak of the "Poly" era-those early metallics that looked like they were mixed with stardust and optimism.

Paint Health Check

Now, let's talk brass tacks. We are firmly in the Single Stage Era. Your '62 didn't come with a protective clear plastic wrapper from the factory; it came with thick, honest Acrylic Lacquer. While that paint is tougher than a nickel steak, it has one fatal flaw: it's a "breather." Over the decades, the sun has been chewing on those pigments, leading to heavy Oxidation. If your Roman Red looks like a chalky pink ghost or your Silver Blue Poly has turned into a matte gray slab, that's the paint quite literally dying on the surface. You might also see "checking"-those tiny spiderweb cracks-where the lacquer has finally lost its grip after sixty years of heat cycles.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage lacquer, you have a secret weapon: there is still "live" paint underneath that chalky mess. You can often buff a 1962 Chevy back to a mirror shine because you're actually leveling the old paint to reveal the fresh color buried below. But listen close: once you've polished it, you've exposed the soft underbelly of the finish. It needs wax or it dies. Without a high-quality sealant or a heavy coat of carnauba, that fresh shine will oxidize again before the next oil change. Treat it like a living thing-keep it fed with wax, keep it out of the midday sun, and it'll outlast us both.
