How to Find Your 1964 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1964 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1964 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 1964, the high-water mark for the "Magic-Mirror" acrylic lacquer finish. Whether you're staring at the curves of a Corvette, the jet-age lines of a Chevy II, or the quirky rear-engine silhouette of a Corvair, you're looking at an era where Chevrolet wasn't afraid to get flashy. Our database tracks 21 distinct shades for this year, and let me tell you, it was a metallic wonderland. From the deep, ocean-floor depth of Daytona Blue Poly to the suburban elegance of Almond Fawn Poly and Saddle Tan Poly, these cars were designed to pop under the California sun. Back then, "Poly" meant metallic, and it meant your neighbors were going to be jealous.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era, my friend. Unlike the modern "shrink-wrapped" plastic finishes of today, your '64 Chevy was sprayed with a thick, honest layer of pigment. There's no clear coat to peel off, but there's a different monster under the bed: Oxidation. If that Ember Red or Azure Aqua Poly is looking dull, it's because the paint is literally "breathing" and drying out. When left in the elements, the surface turns into a chalky, white haze-it's the paint's way of screaming for help. You might also see "checking" or "crazing"-those tiny spiderweb cracks that happen when old lacquer loses its grip on reality after sixty years of heat cycles.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up a survivor, remember: it needs wax or it dies. Because this is single-stage paint, you can actually "revive" the dead layers by buffing away the oxidation to reveal the fresh pigment underneath. But don't get cocky with the high-speed polisher; you're working with history, not a 2024 rental car. Once you've applied your touch-up to those rock chips in the Tuxedo Black or Ermine White, you must seal the deal. Use a high-quality carnauba wax or a period-correct sealant to lock the oils into the paint. If you leave single-stage paint "naked" after a repair, the sun will turn your hard work back into a chalkboard before the next oil change.
