How to Find Your 1970 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1970 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1970 Chevrolet Vibe

In 1970, Chevrolet wasn't just building cars; they were conducting a masterclass in curb appeal. Whether it was a workhorse Truck, a shark-nosed Corvette, or the long-hooded legends categorized as All Other Models, the factory was busy. With a massive 52 colors in our database for this year alone, it's clear the designers were obsessed with variety. You had everything from the "loud and proud" crowd like Hugger Orange and Daytona Yellow to the sophisticated "I have a lawn at the country club" shades like Gobi Beige and the endless variations of Green Mist Metallic. It was an era where the paint was thick, the lead was plentiful, and your car's color was its entire personality.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Single Stage Era. Back in '70, we weren't messing around with fancy clear coats that peel off like a bad sunburn. On these Chevys, the color and the protection were one and the same. But here's the rub: because that pigment is exposed directly to the elements, it's a sitting duck for Oxidation. If your Cranberry Red is starting to look like a dusty pink eraser or your Fathom Blue Metallic has a chalky, white haze over it, that's the paint literally gasping for air. It's drying out, losing its oils, and once it hits that "chalkboard" stage, the finish is on a one-way trip to nowhere.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1970 factory paint is simple: It needs wax or it dies. Unlike modern cars that you can ignore for three years, this vintage single-stage needs regular "feeding." If you're doing a repair or a touch-up, you're dealing with a porous surface that loves to soak up moisture and contaminants. Once you've leveled your repair, you must seal it immediately. A high-quality carnauba wax or a non-synthetic sealer acts like a life-support system for that old-school pigment. Keep it sealed, and that deep Black Cherry Metallic glow will stay in the paint instead of ending up on your buffing pad.
