How to Find Your 1974 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1974 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1974 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 1974, the year Chevrolet decided that if they couldn't give you 400 horsepower anymore, they'd at least give you 58 ways to look good standing still. This was the year of the "big bumper" Corvette and the hard-working C10 Truck, not to mention the Vega-a car that famously tried to return to the earth via rust faster than the factory could spray it. With a massive database of 58 colors ranging from the vibrant Mille Miglia Red and Bright Orange to the quintessentially 70s Dark Green Poly and Beige Irid., Chevy was throwing everything at the palette to see what stuck. It was a glorious, solvent-heavy era where your truck could match your avocado-colored kitchen appliances, and your Corvette looked like it was dipped in liquid glass.

Paint Health Check

Since we are firmly in the Single Stage Era, your 1974 Chevy isn't wearing a protective clear coat "shield" like a modern plastic commuter. Back then, the color and the protection were one and the same, mixed into a thick, honest layer of acrylic lacquer or enamel. But here's the rub: if that Aqua Blue Poly or Medium Red has been sitting out since the Nixon administration, it's likely suffering from "The Chalk." Sunlight eats the binders in single-stage paint, leaving behind a dusty, oxidized film that makes your prize Vega look like it's been rolling in flour. If the paint looks dull and feels like a chalkboard, that's not "patina"-that's your paint literally starving to death.

Restoration Tip

The good news is that 1974 paint is remarkably resilient if there's still meat on the bone. Because the pigment goes all the way through, you can often "save" a faded finish by carefully compounding away the dead, oxidized top layer to reveal the fresh Bright Yellow or Silver Poly hiding underneath. But hear me loud and clear: once you find that shine, it needs wax or it dies. Without a modern clear coat, your single-stage finish has zero defense against the elements. If you don't seal those pores with a high-quality wax or sealant immediately after polishing, the oxidation will return before the next oil change. Keep it sealed, or keep it chalky-the choice is yours.
