Welcome to 1975, the era of the "Square Body" truck and the Corvette trying its best to stay cool while the oil crisis choked out the horsepower. This was the year of the earth tone, and Chevrolet went absolutely wild with the palette-our database tracks 60 colors for this year alone. If you weren't driving a Grecian Bronze C10 or a Dark Sandstone Poly sedan, you were probably making a statement in Hugger Orange or Bright Blue Poly. It was a time when "Poly" and "Irid" (iridescent) meant your paint had enough metallic flake to catch the disco lights at the drive-in, but the tech under the hood-and on the body-was strictly old-school.

If you're looking at original 1975 factory paint, you're looking at the Single Stage Era. Whether it was the acrylic lacquer shot in the St. Louis plant for the Corvettes or the high-solids enamel on the trucks, there was no clear coat to hide behind. The biggest threat to these survivors is "Oxidation." That dull, chalky, milky film you see on the hood? That's the paint literally dying and turning to dust because the pigment is exposed directly to the sun and the rain. Those "Poly" metallics are the most sensitive-once the sun eats the binder, the tiny flakes of aluminum start to point in every direction, and your Silver Blue Poly starts looking like a blackboard.

Restoration Tip

Listen close: with 1975 paint, it needs wax or it dies. Before you touch up a chip with our solvent-based match, you have to get rid of that "dead" oxidized layer. Take a light polishing compound and buff the area until the color looks rich and deep again-if your buffing pad turns the color of the car, don't panic; that's just the top layer of dead single-stage paint coming off. Once the surface is clean and level, apply your touch-up. But here's the kicker: once you're done, you must keep that finish sealed with a high-quality carnauba wax or sealant. Without a clear coat to protect it, that fresh paint is a sitting duck for the elements.
