How to Find Your 1976 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

The 1976 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 1976: the year of the Bicentennial, 8-track tapes, and a Chevrolet color palette that couldn't decide if it wanted to be a patriotic parade or a walk through a forest. With 52 colors in our database, it's clear Chevy was leaning hard into the "variety is the spice of life" mantra. Whether you were rocking a Corvette in Corvette Orange Flame, a C10 Truck in Wheatland Yellow, or one of the All Other Models in something as "Seventies" as Buckskin or Mahogany Metallic, the look was unmistakably bold. It was an era of transition-where the muscle car screams were being softened by earthy browns and greens, but the paint was still laid on with enough substance to actually protect the steel.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '76, clear coats were mostly a laboratory dream; what you see is what you get. This means your Chevy isn't going to "peel" in the modern sense-it's going to "chalk." If your hood looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's classic Oxidation. The pigments in those heavy acrylic lacquers and enamels are literally gasping for air and drying out. Because the color and the protection are mixed into one single layer, the sun is constantly eating away at the surface. If you let it go too far, that "Firethorn Red" will turn into a dull, pinkish matte that no amount of wishing will fix.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1976 steel? It needs wax or it dies. Since you're dealing with a single-stage finish, you have the unique ability to "reface" the paint. A light mechanical polish can often shave off that dead, oxidized top layer to reveal the vibrant 1970s glory hiding underneath. But once you find that shine, you have to seal the deal. Our solvent-based paints are designed to mimic that original thick, deep factory look, but they require a dedicated maintenance schedule. Feed that paint a high-quality carnauba wax every few months. You aren't just making it shiny; you're providing the moisture and UV barrier that the factory forgot to include in the '70s.
