How to Find Your 1979 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1979 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1979 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 1979-the year of disco's last gasp and the height of the "Earth Tone" obsession. Whether you were rolling in a Corvette with its swooping fenders or one of the All Other Models like a boxy Malibu or a heavy-duty Suburban, Chevrolet wasn't shy about the color booth. We've got 36 colors in the database for this year alone. It was a time when you could choose between six different ways to say "Brown" (like that Corvette Hilton Brown Metallic) or go bold with Bright (Mayan) Red and Bright Yellow. From the sophisticated Corvette Light Doeskin to the deep Black (Starlight Sable), the '79 palette was a wild mix of "safety first" neutrals and "look at me" muscle car leftovers.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at original factory paint from 1979, you're standing in the Single Stage Era. This was before the robots took over and started spraying thin layers of clear coat over everything. Back then, the color and the protection were mixed into one thick, honest bucket of acrylic lacquer or enamel. But here is the reality: that paint is thirsty. Because it's a single layer, it's prone to "Oxidation"-that chalky, white fade that makes your Corvette Classic White look like a chalkboard. If you've got a Corvette, you're also likely seeing "checking" or "spider-webbing," which is just the old-school lacquer shrinking and cracking as it realizes it's forty-something years old.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a survivor from 1979, remember the golden rule: It needs wax or it dies. Single-stage paint is porous; it breathes, and it absorbs the elements. If you don't keep a barrier between the pigment and the sun, those free radicals will turn your Dark Carmine Metallic into a flat, dusty pink in a few seasons. If you're using our touch-up to fix chips in a metallic finish like Bright Blue Metallic, don't be surprised if the old surrounding paint looks "darker" when you buff it-that's just the exposed aluminum flakes in the original finish finally getting a chance to shine again. Clean it, prep it, and for heaven's sake, keep a coat of high-quality wax on it to seal the deal.
