How to Find Your 1982 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1982 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1982 Chevrolet Vibe

1982 was a year of transitions. The brand-new S-Series was finally hitting the pavement, the C10 was still the undisputed backbone of the American job site, and the K5 Blazer was the king of the dirt trails. Back then, Chevy wasn't interested in fancy pearls or 50 shades of beige. The palette was bold, utilitarian, and honest. We've focused our collection on the true survivors of the era-the only colors that really mattered when you were ordering a truck to last a lifetime: Bright Red, Spectra Red, and the legendary White. It was a time when a truck looked like a truck, and its paint was built to work as hard as the small-block under the hood.

Paint Health Check

Since we're talking about 1982, you're dealing with the Single Stage Era. Most of these rigs left the factory with thick acrylic enamel or lacquer that didn't have a clear "safety blanket" on top. The good news? That paint is tough as nails. The bad news? It's prone to the "Chalky Fade." If your Bright Red Blazer looks more like a dusty pink carnation, or your Spectra Red hood has lost its reflection, you're looking at heavy oxidation. In this era, the pigments are exposed to the sun every single day. Without a protective barrier, the surface effectively "dies," leaving behind a white, powdery residue that makes the finish look flat and tired.

Restoration Tip

Here's the golden rule for 1982 steel: It needs wax or it dies. If you're touching up a survivor, you can't just spray over that chalky oxidation and expect it to stick. You need to strip away that "dead skin" with a light rubbing compound or a dedicated paint cleaner first. Once you get down to the fresh pigment and apply your touch-up, you must seal the deal. These single-stage finishes require a high-quality carnauba wax or a modern sealant to act as a sacrificial layer against the UV rays. Treat it like a living thing-keep it fed with wax, and that 1982 shine will outlast anything coming off a modern assembly line.
