How to Find Your 1983 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1983 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1983 Chevrolet Vibe

1983 was the year Chevrolet was moving serious iron. The "Square Body" C10 was at the top of its game, the G-Series vans were the undisputed kings of the carpool and the job site, and the little S10 was just starting to prove its mettle. It was a time of high-waisted jeans and high-torque small blocks. Our database focuses on the four colors that actually survived the decade: Black, White, and those twin titans of the era-Bright Red and Spectra Red. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the American road.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at original 1983 factory paint, you're dealing with the Single Stage Era. Back then, Chevy was laying down thick acrylic enamels that looked a mile deep when they rolled off the line, but they had a major weakness: they were "breathers." Without a clear coat to seal them in, these paints are porous. Over forty years, the sun has literally sucked the oils out of the finish, leading to heavy Oxidation. If your "Spectra Red" looks more like a dusty pink or your "Black" has turned into a chalky charcoal gray, that's not a lost cause-that's just the paint gasping for air.

Restoration Tip

Before you even think about touching up a chip, you have to deal with the "chalk." If you try to apply new paint over an oxidized surface, it'll stick to the dead paint molecules and peel off before the weekend is over. Use a dedicated rubbing compound to "dead-head" the surface and get back to the true pigment underneath. Once you've made your repair, remember the golden rule for 1983 iron: It needs wax or it dies. Without a modern sealant or a high-quality wax, that single-stage finish will start oxidizing again the moment you pull it out of the garage. Keep it sealed, and that 80s glow will stay as sharp as a fresh mullet.
