How to Find Your 1984 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1984 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1984 Chevrolet Vibe

It's 1984. Jump by Van Halen is blasting through the Delco head unit of a brand-new C10 Silverado, and the boxy S-Series is finally proving that a small truck can do big work. This was the year of the "Digital Dash" and the debut of the C4 Corvette, a time when Chevy was balancing old-school grit with a new, high-tech swagger. While the factory floor was buzzing, our database has narrowed down the survivors to the essential trio that truly defined the streets: Black, Bright Red, and that ubiquitous 80s Tan. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the American workforce and the weekend warrior alike.

Paint Health Check

In '84, we were still firmly in the Single Stage Era. This was high-solids enamel-tough as a heavy-duty frame but with a serious weakness for the sun. Unlike modern cars that peel like a bad sunburn, your 1984 Chevy doesn't usually delaminate; it just gets "The Chalk." If your Bright Red hood looks more like a dusty pink chalkboard, that's oxidation. The pigment is literally dying on the surface because the protective binders have given up the ghost. It's a "meat and potatoes" paint job-durable and thick, but it's a living finish that requires a lot more than a quick trip through a car wash to stay alive.

Restoration Tip

If you're lucky enough to have original 1984 paint, remember the golden rule: It needs wax or it dies. Because there's no clear coat to hide behind, the color you see is the only line of defense between the metal and the elements. If your Tan or Black finish has gone flat, you can often buff it back to a mirror shine with a light cutting compound, but don't get greedy-every time you polish, you're taking a microscopic layer of color with you. Once you've brought the gloss back, seal it immediately. In this era, a high-quality wax isn't an option; it's a life-support system.
