How to Find Your 1985 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1985 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1985 Chevrolet Vibe

1985 was the year Chevrolet decided the future was digital, but the paint was still caught in a tug-of-war between the old-school muscle of the C10-C30 pickups and the high-tech fiberglass of the C4 Corvette. Whether you were hauling drywall in a G-Series Van or pretending you were in a synth-pop video behind the wheel of a Bright Red S-10, the look was unmistakable: bold, punchy, and ready to work. While our database focuses on the 7 essential survivors-the Silver Metallics, the Tans, and the Whites that defined the era-don't let those simple names fool you. This was the year Chevy tried to bridge the gap between "work truck tough" and "showroom shine," and the results were... well, let's call them "memorable."

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the dawn of The Peeling Era. In 1985, the industry was moving fast toward early basecoat-clearcoat systems, and General Motors was leading the charge-sometimes right off a cliff. If your 1985 Chevy looks like it's suffering from a bad case of road-rash or a peeling sunburn, you're witnessing classic delamination. The chemists back then were still tweaking the recipe, and the bond between the color and the clear coat was often as weak as a cassette tape left on a hot dashboard. Once the UV rays hit that Silver Metallic or Tan finish, the clear coat would lose its grip and start flaking off in sheets, leaving the pigment underneath exposed and defenseless.

Restoration Tip

If you still have original 1985 paint that hasn't started "molting" yet, consider yourself lucky-but don't get cocky. The biggest threat to these mid-80s finishes is a simple rock chip. Because the clear coat adhesion is historically finicky, a single nick acts like a perforated edge on a notebook; once air and moisture get under that clear layer, it will start to lift and "run" across the panel. Seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. Use a high-quality touch-up to bridge the gap between the color and the surrounding clear. You aren't just fixing a spot; you're essentially "spot-welding" the clear coat back to the truck so it doesn't decide to part ways with the basecoat on your next car wash.
