How to Find Your 1988 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1988 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1988 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to the "Heartbeat of America," 1988 edition. This was the year the legendary GMT400 Silverado and Full Size Pick-Up hit the streets with those stacked headlights, and the C4 Corvette was still trying to convince us that digital dashboards were the future. Whether you were hauling the family in an Astro van or a Suburban, the look was unmistakable: bold, boxy, and unapologetically American. We've curated the 7 colors that actually survived the decade-the heavy hitters like Bright Red, Silver Metallic, and Tan. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the late-80s highway.

Paint Health Check

If you're driving a 1988 Chevy, you're squarely in what we call The Peeling Era. By this time, the factory had fully committed to the Basecoat/Clearcoat system, but they hadn't quite perfected the "staying attached" part. This era is notorious for Delamination-that heartbreaking phenomenon where the clear coat decides it's had enough of the base coat and starts flaking off like a bad sunburn. It usually starts on the horizontal surfaces of your Blazer or S Series truck. If your Silver Metallic hood is starting to look a bit "chalky" or has white, crusty edges around the chips, your clear coat is waving the white flag.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1988 steel: Seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. In this era, a rock chip isn't just an eyesore; it's an entry point for moisture to get between the layers. Once that clear coat starts to lose its grip and "bridge" over a chip, the wind and rain will do the rest, peeling it back in sheets. When you're touching up that Bright Red or White, make sure you clean the area thoroughly to remove any oxidized clear coat around the edges. Dab the color in, and if you're using a clear topcoat, don't overlap too far onto the old, failing clear-stay focused on sealing the "wound" to keep the rest of the factory finish pinned down.
