How to Find Your 1989 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1989 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1989 Chevrolet Vibe

1989 was a year of transition in the Chevy garage. You had the legendary square-body Suburban and Silverado C/K trucks holding the line, while the sleek C4 Corvette was out there chasing Ferraris and the Geo Metro was... well, trying its best to keep up. Our database tracks the 9 essential survivors from this year-from the high-visibility Bright Red of a weekend cruiser to the workhorse Arctic White and Tan seen on every job site in America. It was an era where trucks were still trucks, and the paint was designed to look deep and glossy on the showroom floor, even if the chemistry in the lab was secretly plotting its escape.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of "The Peeling Era." By 1989, GM was fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but they hadn't quite perfected the "staying attached" part. If your '89 hasn't been kept in a dark garage for thirty years, you're likely dealing with delamination. This is where the clear coat decides it's done with the relationship and starts lifting off the color coat in big, flaky sheets-especially on the horizontal surfaces like the hood and roof. The culprit was often the primer-sealer underneath; it was sensitive to UV light, so once a chip or scratch let the sun in, the bond would fail. It's not just a chip; it's the start of a "sunburn" that won't stop until the whole panel is bare.

Restoration Tip

When you're patching an '89, you have to treat the edges of the existing clear coat like a loose thread on a cheap sweater. If you just dab paint into a chip without securing the surrounding clear, the new paint will eventually lift right along with the old factory finish. The Pro Move: Use a fine-grit sandpaper (around 1000-1500) to very gently feather the edges of the peeling clear until they are smooth and stable. Once you've got a solid "anchor" point, apply your touch-up layers. Seal those edges immediately with a fresh clear coat to prevent air and moisture from getting back under the factory finish and starting the peel all over again.
