How to Find Your 1992 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1992 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1992 Chevrolet Vibe

1992 was a year of transitions. You had the C4 Corvette finally getting the LT1 heart transplant it deserved, while the Geo Metro was out there buzzing around like a motorized roller skate. It was a time when "Light Driftwood Metallic" was the height of sophistication and every Astro van in the suburbs was a rolling fortress of family vacations. We've locked down 12 of the most iconic colors from this era in our database-from the high-velocity Torch Red to the workhorse Arctic White-to make sure the survivors of the "Great Grunge Era" don't just fade into the background.

Paint Health Check

If you're driving a '92, you are living in the heart of "The Peeling Era." This was the decade where the industry fully committed to clear coat tech, but the bond between the primer and the top coat was... let's just say, a work in progress. On a Chevrolet from this vintage, you aren't just fighting oxidation; you're fighting delamination. It starts as a tiny white bubble or a "sunburn" on the roof, hood, or tops of the doors. Once the clear coat decides to part ways with the base color, it tends to come off in sheets, leaving your Medium Red Metallic or Silver Metallic looking like a dry lake bed.

Restoration Tip

In this era, a stone chip is more than an eyesore-it's an entry point for disaster. On a 1992 Chevy, you need to seal chips immediately before the clear coat has a chance to catch the wind and start lifting. If you already have some lifting at the edges, do not just "blob" paint over it. Carefully feather the edges of the failing clear coat with a fine-grit abrasive until the "scab" is gone and the transition is smooth. Only then should you apply your touch-up. Think of it like a surgical graft; if the foundation is loose, the new finish won't stand a chance when the sun starts beating down again.
