How to Find Your 1996 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1996 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1996 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 1996-the year The Macarena was inescapable and the Tahoe officially took over the suburban driveway. Whether you were hauling the family in an Astro van or cruising in the final year of the C4 Corvette, Chevrolet had a look for everyone. Our database shows a respectable 15-color spread for this year, and it's a time capsule of mid-90s taste. You had the "classy" metallics like Dark Toreador Metallic and the ever-present Light Driftwood Metallic (the official color of the 90s shopping mall), alongside the bold Torch Red for the guys who wanted to make sure the highway patrol saw them coming. It was a solid lineup, but as any salty painter will tell you, the beauty was often skin-deep.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in The Peeling Era here. By 1996, the factory had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the "bean counters" were still playing fast and loose with the chemistry. If you're looking at a 1996 Chevy today, you're likely dealing with delamination-that's the fancy industry word for your clear coat peeling off in giant, flaky sheets like a bad sunburn. Arctic White and Indigo Metallic were notorious for this. The bond between the color and the clear was temperamental; once a rock chip or a deep scratch broke the seal, the UV rays and moisture started a slow-motion divorce between the layers. If your roof or hood looks like it's shedding its skin, you've got a classic case of 90s clear coat failure.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1996 iron is "Seal it or Lose it." Because these clear coats are prone to lifting, you cannot leave a rock chip exposed to the elements. If air and moisture get under that clear edge, it will start to "creep," and what was a tiny speck today will be a palm-sized flake by next summer. When you use our touch-up kit, don't just dab the color and walk away. You need to carefully seal the edges of the existing clear coat with the applicator to "lock" it down. If the clear is already flaking, gently sand the "shelf" (the edge where the clear meets the bare color) until it's smooth before applying your fresh layers. This stops the peeling in its tracks and saves you from a total respray.
