How to Find Your 1999 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

1999 Chevrolet Background Info

The 1999 Chevrolet Vibe

Nineteen-ninety-nine was a year of looking forward and looking back. While everyone was stockpiling canned beans for Y2K, Chevrolet was busy rolling out the first of the GMT800 Silverado Pick-Ups and keeping the C5 Corvette dream alive. It was the era of the Suburban, the Tahoe, and the indestructible Astro van. In our database, we've preserved 22 specific shades from this transition year-from the workhorse Arctic White and Indigo Metallic found on the S-Series, to the Torch Red that defined the Camaro and Corvette. It was a time when metallic flakes started getting finer and "pewter" tones like Light Driftwood were the height of suburban sophistication.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of The Peeling Era. By 1999, Chevrolet had fully committed to the Basecoat/Clearcoat system, but the chemistry was still going through some growing pains. If your Blazer or Cavalier has spent its life under the sun, you're likely familiar with "Delamination." This is when the clear coat loses its grip on the base color, starting as a cloudy bubble and eventually flaking off in sheets like a bad sunburn. This era's metallics, like Silver Metallic and Canyon Red Pearl, are especially vulnerable because the metallic flakes can act like little mirrors, reflecting UV rays back up through the clear and cooking the bond from the inside out.

Restoration Tip

If you see a rock chip on your 1999 Chevy, you're on a ticking clock. In this era of paint, a single chip is an open door for moisture and air to get under the clear coat. Once that happens, the "lift" will start spreading, and before you know it, you're repainting the whole hood. The Fix: Seal those chips immediately. Use a high-quality solvent-based touch-up to "cap" the edges of the crater. By sealing the perimeter of the chip, you lock the clear coat down to the base, preventing the delamination from traveling across the panel. It's the difference between a five-minute touch-up and a three-day sanding nightmare.
