How to Find Your 2000 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

2000 Chevrolet Background Info

The 2000 Chevrolet Vibe

The year 2000 was a wild time for the Bowtie. Everyone was bracing for a digital apocalypse that never came, while Chevrolet was busy flooding the suburbs with a massive fleet of Suburbans, Tahoes, and Silverados. With a database count of 30 colors, Chevy wasn't shy about variety-even if it felt like every third Impala or Cavalier leaving the lot was sprayed in Galaxy Silver Metallic. From the Millennium Yellow on the C5 Corvette to the "early 2000s dad" shades like Light Driftwood Metallic and Dark Bronzemist, these cars were the bridge between the boxy 90s and the curvaceous future. It was a high-water mark for utility, but a bit of a gamble for the finish.

Paint Health Check

We call 2000 the heart of the "Peeling Era." By this time, the industry had mastered the look of the basecoat-clearcoat system, but the bond between them was still a work in progress at the factory. If you're looking at an original-paint S-Series or Express van today, you're likely dealing with delamination. This is where the clear coat decides it's done with its job and starts lifting off in thin, crispy sheets-especially on the horizontal surfaces like the hood and roof. Indigo Metallic and Arctic White were notorious for this "sunburn" effect. Once that clear coat loses its grip on the color layer, the basecoat underneath is left defenseless against the elements and will fade to a chalky mess in no time.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping a 2000 Chevy looking respectable is early intervention. This era of clear coat is brittle; a single rock chip is basically a "perforation" that allows air and moisture to crawl between the layers. Once that happens, the clear will start to "bridge" and eventually flake off in chunks. My advice? Seal your chips the second you see them. Don't wait until the hood looks like it's molting. By filling that chip with a fresh dab of color and a proper clear seal, you lock down the edges and prevent the delamination from spreading across the entire panel. If you've already got the "map" look on your roof, you'll need to sand back to a stable edge before you even think about spraying, or your new paint will just hitch a ride on the old clear as it peels away.
