How to Find Your 2001 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

2001 Chevrolet Background Info

The 2001 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to the dawn of the millennium, where the 2001 Chevrolet lineup was caught between two worlds. On one hand, you had the swan song of the 4th-gen Camaro and the rugged simplicity of the S-Series pickups; on the other, the "bubble" styling of the Cavalier and Malibu was in full swing. Our database is rocking 29 different colors from this year, reflecting a time when Chevy wasn't afraid to get flashy. While Galaxy Silver Metallic was the unofficial uniform of the American suburbs, we still saw plenty of "look-at-me" Indigo Metallic Tahoes and Sunset Orange Pri Metallic Camaros tearing up the pavement. It was an era of high variety and big personalities.

Paint Health Check

If you're driving a survivor from 2001, you're likely intimately familiar with "The Great Delamination." This was the peak of the Peeling Era. At the factory, the bond between the color coat and the clear coat wasn't always a lifelong marriage. On many 2001 Silverados, Suburbans, and Tahoes, the clear coat eventually decides to retire early, flaking off in large, translucent sheets like a bad sunburn. It usually starts on the horizontal surfaces-the hood and roof-where the UV rays bake the clear until it loses its grip on the basecoat. Once that clear lifts, the pigment underneath is exposed to the elements and will fade faster than a boy band's career.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping a 2001 finish alive is speed. Because this era is prone to delamination, a tiny rock chip isn't just an eyesore; it's an invitation for air and moisture to get under the clear coat and start the peeling process. Seal your chips immediately. If you notice the clear coat starting to look white or "cloudy" around the edges of a chip, that's the clear lifting. Use a fine-grit sandpaper to very gently "feather" that lifting edge back until you hit solid territory before applying your touch-up. If you just paint over a lifting edge, you're essentially just putting a band-aid on a bubble-it's going to pop sooner or later.
