How to Find Your 2002 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

2002 Chevrolet Background Info

The 2002 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 2002, the year Chevrolet decided that if a vehicle existed, it needed a Bowtie on the grille. We're talking about a massive lineup-everything from the workhorse Express vans and the "is-it-a-truck-or-an-SUV" Avalanche to the final hurrah of the fourth-gen Camaro. Looking at our database of 40 colors, it's clear GM was in its "Silver Age." You couldn't throw a rock in a grocery store parking lot without hitting a Galaxy Silver Metallic Impala or a Light Tarnished Silver Malibu. But for the folks with a bit more soul, we saw the rise of hero colors like Sunset Orange Pri Metallic on the Corvette and that deep, moody Indigo Metallic on the Suburban. It was a time of variety, but underneath that shimmer, the chemistry was starting to show its age.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in The Peeling Era. By 2002, the industry had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, and while it looked great in the showroom, the long-term bond between the layers was... optimistic. If you're looking at a 2002 Chevy today, you're likely seeing the "GM Sunburn"-that's delamination where the clear coat decides it's done being attached to the base color. It usually starts as a small, cloudy spot on the roof or the hood of an Arctic White Silverado or a Silver Green Metallic Trailblazer, and once the air gets under that clear, it peels off in sheets like a bad tan after a week in Cabo. The pigment underneath is often still there, but without that clear shield, it's defenseless against the elements.

Restoration Tip

If you still have your factory clear coat intact, count your blessings and seal your chips immediately. In this era, a stone chip isn't just an eyesore; it's an entry point for moisture and air to begin the delamination process. When you use our touch-up, you aren't just adding color; you're creating a solvent-bonded seal that locks the edges of the clear coat down. Don't wait for the "clouding" to start. If you see a nick on the leading edge of that Monte Carlo hood, dab it, seal it, and keep that clear coat pinned to the floor. Once the clear lifts, no amount of wax will save it-you have to catch it while the bond is still holding.
