How to Find Your 2003 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

2003 Chevrolet Background Info

The 2003 Chevrolet Vibe

Welcome to 2003: the year Chevrolet decided the Avalanche was a good idea and the SSR was even better. It was a time of transition for the Bowtie-we were moving away from the "carved bar of soap" look of the 90s and into sharper, chiseled edges. With a massive 46 colors in our vault for this year, Chevy was clearly feeling experimental. Whether you were rocking Arrival Blue Metallic on a Silverado or Sunset Orange on an S-10, the lot looked like a high-metallic fever dream. It was the peak of the "Silver Era," where Galaxy Silver Metallic was the undisputed king of the suburban driveway.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a 2003 Chevy today, you're likely staring at the poster child for the Peeling Era. By the early 2000s, GM had mastered the look of a deep, glossy finish, but the bond between the basecoat and the clear coat was... let's say, "optimistic." We call it delamination, but to you, it looks like a bad sunburn on the roof of your Tahoe or the hood of your Impala. Once that factory clear coat starts to lift in those large, flaky sheets, the pigment underneath has about as much UV protection as a newspaper in a desert. If your Corvette or SSR has been garaged, you might still have that showroom shine, but for the daily-driver Blazers and Cavaliers, the clear coat is usually looking to make a run for it.

Restoration Tip

The secret to saving a 2003 finish is all about the "Edge Guard" strategy. When you spot a rock chip in that Dark Spiral Gray or Victory Red, you aren't just fixing a cosmetic blemish-you're sealing a breach. Because the clear coat from this era is prone to lifting, a chip acts like a perforated edge on a notebook. Air and moisture get under the lip of the clear, and before you know it, a tiny speck becomes a palm-sized peel. Use your touch-up paint to bridge the gap between the chip and the surrounding clear coat immediately. By sealing the perimeter of the damage, you're essentially "gluing" the clear back down to the base and stopping the delamination before it starts its slow crawl across your hood.
