How to Find Your 2006 Chevrolet's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

2006 Chevrolet Background Info

The 2006 Chevrolet Vibe

2006 was the year Chevrolet decided to give us a bit of everything-from the retro-funk of the HHR and the "is-it-a-truck-or-a-spaceship" SSR to the absolute workhorse Silverado. With a massive 104 colors in our database for this year, they weren't exactly holding back. You had Sunburst Orange Metallic making the Equinox look like a sunset on wheels, while Corvette Le Mans Blue kept the halo cars looking sharp. Whether you were rocking an Aveo or a heavy-duty Kodiak, the 2006 palette was all about variety, ranging from subtle silvers like Fine Silver Birch to the bold, unmistakable Victory Red.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the "Thin Paint Era." By 2006, the factory robots were getting a little too efficient for their own good. They were programmed to spray just enough paint to look pretty on the showroom floor, but not necessarily enough to survive twenty years of road debris and UV rays. We call it "Robot Efficiency." Because the film build is so lean-often no thicker than a sheet of printer paper-this era is notorious for two things: gravel-induced "peppering" on the front clips and clear coat delamination. If your Silverado or Tahoe looks like it's got a bad sunburn on the roof where the clear is flaking off in sheets, you've experienced the classic mid-2000s GM delamination struggle.

Restoration Tip

Since the factory finish is notoriously thin, your biggest mistake would be "blobbing" the repair. When you're filling a chip on a 2006 Cobalt or Impala, don't try to fill the entire crater in one go. Because the surrounding paint has almost no "meat" to it, a giant blob will stand out like a sore thumb and be nearly impossible to sand flat without burning through the neighboring factory clear coat. Instead, build your layers slowly. Apply a thin coat, let it flash, and repeat until you've built the depth back up to level. It takes a little more patience, but it's the only way to match the precision that those factory robots originally intended.
