How to Find Your Chevrolet Full Size Pick-Up's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

The Color Breakdown

Chevrolet has been building these workhorses forever, and they've documented a staggering 94 colors along the way. They really went for it-from the "I'm here to work" shades like Pewter Metallic and Bright White to the "look at me" vibes of Indigo Metallic and Emerald Green Metallic. Whether your truck is dressed in one of the many "50 shades of silver" (looking at you, Silvermist and Sebring Silver) or a classic Victory Red, there is a lot of history in that pigment.

What to Watch For

Before you start dabbing, we need to find your "birth certificate." For most Chevy trucks made before 2018, look inside the glove box for a white sticker filled with three-digit codes. You're looking for a code that starts with "U" (for Upper). Pro tip: if your sticker says U 9260, your actual paint code is WA9260. If your truck is 2018 or newer, check the driver's side door jamb for a QR code you can scan with your phone.

In terms of wear, Chevy clear coats are known for "retiring early," especially on the hood, roof, and the tops of the doors. If you see the paint starting to look flaky or chalky in those spots, don't panic. It just means those areas have seen a lot of sun and need a little extra love to keep the metal protected.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many of these colors are metallics (anything with "Metallic" or "Silver" in the name), your biggest challenge isn't the color-it's the sparkles. Those tiny metallic flakes like to settle at the bottom of the bottle like sand at the beach. Shake your touch-up bottle for a full 60 seconds-longer than you think you need to-to wake them up.

When applying, remember that your touch-up brush is a wand, not a shovel. Use multiple thin layers rather than one big glob. If you're working on a metallic shade, it requires patience to get the flakes to lay down right, so give it ten minutes between dabs. You've got this!
