How to Find Your Chevrolet HHR's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

The Color Breakdown

The Chevrolet HHR was built to look like a vintage panel truck, but the color palette was pure modern madness. Chevy really went for it with 69 recorded colors, ranging from the moody Majestic Amethyst Metallic to the high-energy Sunburst Orange II Metallic. Whether you're driving a "classic" Black Pearl or the surprisingly techy Techno Gray Metallic, the HHR was clearly designed for people who wanted to be noticed-or at least seen-at the grocery store.

What to Watch For

Before you pop that cap, we need to find your "birth certificate." Open your glove box and look for a silver or white sticker called the Service Parts Identification label. At the bottom, you'll see a code usually starting with "WA" (like WA517Q) or a two-digit number followed by a "U" (for Upper).

The HHR has a bit of a reputation for being "thin-skinned" on its horizontal surfaces. Keep a close eye on the front bumper, the hood, and the roof-these areas are prone to the clear coat getting tired and starting to flake. If you see tiny white spots on the plastic bumpers, catch them early! Those are just battle scars from the road that are begging for a quick dab of protection.

Driveway Repair Tip

Because so many HHR colors are packed with "Metallic" and "Effect" suffixes, they require a bit of patience to get that factory glow back. Those tiny metal flakes like to settle at the bottom of the bottle like sand at the beach. Shake your touch-up bottle for a full 60 seconds (time it!) to make sure the sparkles are evenly distributed. When applying, think "less is more." Use the tip of the brush to deposit a tiny drop into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. It's better to do two paper-thin layers than one big "blob" that stands out like a sore thumb.
