How to Find Your Chevrolet Impala's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

The Color Breakdown

Chevrolet has given the Impala a massive wardrobe over the years, with a staggering 170 colors recorded. They really went for it with the naming conventions, ranging from the classically cool Galaxy Silver Metallic to the surprisingly evocative Tin Roof Rusted Metallic. If you're driving around in Black Meet Kettle Pearl or You Drive Me Grazy Pearl, you've got a car with a personality as big as its trunk. Whether you have a "Gasoline" grey or a "Limited Addiction" pearl, your Impala was designed to stand out-even if it's currently standing out because of a few parking lot battle scars.

What to Watch For

Before you start dabbing on that paint, we need to find your "Service Parts Identification" sticker. While many cars keep this on the door jamb, the Impala likes to be a bit more mysterious. You should check the glove box first, but if it's not there, head to the trunk. Lift the carpet and check the spare tire cover or the floor of the trunk itself-it's often a silver sticker hiding near the jack. Look for a code starting with "WA" followed by four digits.

As for the paint itself, keep an eye on the roof and hood. Many Impalas are prone to the "clear coat exit strategy," where the top layer starts to flake or bubble after years of sun exposure. If you see white, cloudy patches, it's a sign the clear coat is getting thin. If you catch chips early on the hood or door edges, you can stop that peeling in its tracks before it spreads like a bad rumor.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many Impala colors are Metallic or Pearl, my number one rule is to shake your touch-up bottle or can for a full 60 seconds-and I mean "track-and-field" levels of shaking. Those tiny metallic flakes like to settle at the bottom, and if you don't wake them up, your repair will look darker than the rest of the car. When applying, think "thin and patient." It is much better to apply three paper-thin layers that barely cover the scratch than to put one giant "blob" on there. If you're using a pen, just dab the center of the chip and let the paint flow to the edges on its own. It requires some patience, but your driveway results will look miles better than a rushed job.
