How to Find Your Chevrolet Monte Carlo's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

The Color Breakdown

The Chevrolet Monte Carlo didn't just come in colors; it came in moods. Over its storied run, we've recorded a staggering 79 colors. Chevrolet clearly wanted to cover every base, from the track-ready Torch Red and Arrival Blue Metallic to the more sophisticated, "I'm-headed-to-the-yacht-club" shades like Cappuccino Frost Metallic and Light Driftwood Metallic. Whether yours is a sleek Galaxy Silver or a deep Dark Toreador Red, the Monte Carlo was a car that wore its personality on its sleeve-or rather, its hood.

What to Watch For

Before you get started, you need to find your "paint fingerprint." On a Monte Carlo, your paint code is usually hiding in the trunk. Look for a white or silver "Service Parts Identification" sticker (often called a SPID label) located on the underside of the trunk lid or tucked away on the spare tire cover. You're looking for a code that starts with "BC/CC" (Basecoat/Clearcoat) followed by a "WA" and four digits, like WA9075.

As for the paint itself, the Monte Carlo is a classic GM coupe with a lot of horizontal real estate. This means the hood and roof take the brunt of the sun's rays, which can lead to the clear coat getting a little tired and flaky over time. Those massive, heavy doors are also famous for "parking lot battle scars"-keep a close eye on the door edges where they tend to meet high curbs or neighboring cars.

Driveway Repair Tip

Because so many Monte Carlo colors are "Metallic" or "Effect" paints (meaning they have tiny flakes of metal or pearl inside), your best friend is a vigorous arm workout. Shake your touch-up bottle for at least 60 full seconds-even if it says it's already mixed. This "wakes up" those metallic sparkles so they don't all sit at the bottom of the bottle, ensuring your repair actually glimmers like the rest of the car.

When applying, remember that three thin, whisper-light coats are always better than one big, gloopy drop. If you're fixing a chip on those long door edges, use the tip of the applicator to just "dot" the color in. It requires a little patience to let each layer dry, but it keeps the repair level with the rest of your beautiful Chevy finish.
