How to Find Your Chevrolet Tahoe's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

The Color Breakdown

Over the years, Chevrolet has blessed the Tahoe with a staggering 223 recorded colors. They really went for it with the naming conventions, ranging from the classic Pewter Metallic and Summit White to the surprisingly poetic Old Blue Eyes Metallic and Limited Addiction Pearl. Whether you're driving a Tahoe that's Black Meet Kettle Pearl or the rugged Son Of A Gun Gray, you are pilot to a lot of painted real estate. With so many silvers and grays in the lineup, it's like a rolling "50 Shades of Graphite," but each one has a specific personality that needs the right touch to stay sharp.

What to Watch For

Because the Tahoe is built like a fortress, it has a lot of horizontal surface area that catches the sun. Keep a close eye on the roof and the leading edge of the hood; the clear coat here can get a bit "cloudy" if left in the sun too long. If you have an older model in Olympic White, you might notice the paint wanting to part ways with the metal-a phenomenon we affectionately call "The GM Peel." To get ahead of it, find your paint code first. On older Tahoes (pre-2014), look for a silver sticker inside your glove box. For newer models (2015 and up), check the driver-side door jamb. You're looking for a code that usually starts with "WA" or "U," often found near a small QR code.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since the Tahoe features so many complex Metallic and Pearl finishes, the "secret sauce" is in the shake. Before you touch that chip, shake your paint pen or bottle for a full 60 seconds. You need to wake up all those tiny metallic flakes so they don't just sit at the bottom of the bottle. When applying, think "thin and patient." Instead of filling a deep chip with one big blob of paint, apply two or three very thin layers, letting each one dry for about 20 minutes. This prevents the paint from looking like a raised bump and ensures the color stays uniform with the rest of your rig.
