How to Find Your Chevrolet Truck's Color Code

Chevrolet did not make it easy to find the color code. Over the years they used many different locations and did not standardize the color plate, so it can be hard to locate. Usually it is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise, the search may extend everywhere. The typical code is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC. Two tone codes can appear as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (U for Upper, L for Lower).

The Color Breakdown

Chevrolet has recorded a staggering 306 colors for their trucks over the years, proving they know their audience isn't just looking for "Work Truck White." They really went for it with the palette-offering everything from the legendary Hugger Orange and Hawaiian Blue to the more sophisticated Silver Gray Metallic and the vintage Meadow Green. Whether your truck is wearing a classic shade like Ochre or a modern Medium Graystone Metallic, Chevy's history is a colorful one that spans from "bold and loud" to "stealthy and stoic."

What to Watch For

If you're hunting for your paint code, don't look under the hood first. Chevrolet likes to keep it tucked away-traditionally, you'll find the "Service Parts Identification" sticker inside the glove box. On newer models, check the driver's side door jamb for a silver sticker or a QR code. You're looking for a code that usually starts with "WA" followed by four digits, like WA8555 for Black. In terms of the paint itself, Chevy trucks are famous for what we call "sunburn." The clear coat on the hood and roof tends to flake off in large, thin sheets as it ages. You might also notice the paint wearing thin specifically around the exterior door handles, where years of grabbing and pulling eventually rub through the finish to the primer below.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many of these truck colors are high-sparkle metallics like Catalina Blue Metallic or Saddle Irid., your bottle of touch-up paint is basically a snow globe. You need to shake that bottle for at least 60 seconds-longer than you think-to "wake up" the metallic flakes. If you don't, the color will look flat and dark compared to your truck. If you're dealing with a peeling clear coat "scab," use your fingernail or a plastic edge to gently flick away any loose bits that are already lifting before you start. If you paint over a loose edge, your repair will eventually just flake off like a bad band-aid. Apply your paint in thin, dainty layers; it's much easier to add a second coat than it is to fix a giant, sagging drip on the side of your door.
