How to Find Your 1959 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1959 Chrysler Background Info

The 1959 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to 1959, the year the fins grew so large they needed their own zip codes. Whether you're rocking an Imperial or one of the All Other Models like the New Yorker or Saratoga, you're steering a "Forward Look" masterpiece. With 25 colors in our vault, Chrysler wasn't shy about making a statement. We're talking about the high-society flash of Persian Pink, the space-age shimmer of Bimini Blue, and the glowing depth of Fireglow Poly. Back then, your car didn't just sit in the driveway; it announced your promotion to the neighborhood in "Lustre-Bond" glory.

Paint Health Check

This is the Single Stage Era, kid. Chrysler's "Lustre-Bond" enamel was advertised as a miracle that didn't need wax for three years-which was a flat-out lie. Because there's no clear coat protecting the pigment, these cars don't "peel"; they oxidize. If your Deep Ruby Poly looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's the paint quite literally dying and turning into chalk. The "Poly" (polychromatic) metallic colors are the most temperamental; once that metallic flake is exposed to the air through oxidation, it's a race against time before the finish turns permanently dull and flat. It needs wax or it dies-simple as that.

Restoration Tip

If you're staring at a chalky hood, don't panic and reach for the sandpaper yet. Single-stage enamel is thick and forgiving. You can usually "bring back the dead" with a heavy rubbing compound and a slow-speed buffer to peel back that top layer of oxidation and reveal the vibrant Aqua Mist or Spun Yellow underneath. Once you've found the shine, seal it immediately with a high-quality carnauba wax or a modern sealant. If you leave it "naked" after buffing, it'll oxidize twice as fast as it did in 1959.
