How to Find Your 1969 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1969 Chrysler Background Info

The 1969 Chrysler Vibe

1969 was the year Chrysler decided their cars should look like they were carved out of a single, aerodynamic block of steel. They called it the "Fuselage Look," and whether you were piloting a 300, a New Yorker, or the massive Imperial, you were driving a land yacht with enough gravity to have its own moons. With 27 colors in our database, Chrysler wasn't shy about the palette. You had everything from the dignified Spinnaker White and Navajo Beige for the executive set, to the "look-at-me" Hemi Orange and Deep Plum that signaled the dawn of the High-Impact era. It was a time when a car's footprint was measured in acreage and its paint was meant to be seen from orbit.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '69, the factory didn't bother with a clear coat; they just sprayed thick, honest acrylic enamel or lacquer and sent it. This stuff is durable, but it's a living finish. If your Chrysler has been sitting out in the sun, you're likely looking at Oxidation-that chalky, matte haze that makes Dark Emerald Poly look like a chalkboard. The metallics (what Chrysler called "Poly") are the most vulnerable. Once the binders on the surface start to break down, the metallic flakes are exposed to the air and the "glow" just dies.

Restoration Tip

Before you even think about touching up a chip, you've got to "level" the old paint. If you apply fresh, glossy paint to an oxidized surface, it'll stand out like a neon sign on a foggy night. Give the area a light buff with a polishing compound to remove the dead, chalky layers and reveal the true color underneath. My golden rule for 1969 iron: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've finished your repair, keep that big boat sealed with a high-quality carnauba or sealant. If you don't feed the paint, the sun will eat it.
