How to Find Your 1971 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1971 Chrysler Background Info

The 1971 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to 1971, the year Chrysler decided their color palette should look like a fistfight between a psychedelic rock poster and a high-end steakhouse. We've got 28 colors in the books for this year, and let me tell you, "subtle" wasn't in the vocabulary. You had the High-Impact wild children like Curious Yellow and Sassy-Grass Green screaming for attention on the street, while the big-body New Yorkers and Imperials were cruising around in "I own the bank" shades like Tahitian Walnut Poly and Evening Blue Poly. Whether you were driving a fuselage-styled land yacht or a tire-shredding muscle car, Chrysler made sure you weren't missed. It was a glorious, pigment-heavy era where "Gold Leaf Poly" wasn't just a name; it was a lifestyle.

Paint Health Check

Listen close: this is the Single Stage Era. In '71, we were spraying thick, honest acrylic enamel. There's no clear coat to save you here. If your Chrysler has been sitting in the sun, it's probably looking less like a car and more like a chalkboard. That's called Oxidation. When the binder in the paint gives up the ghost, the pigment rises to the top and turns into a dusty, chalky film. If you rub your hand across that In-Violet Poly and your palm comes away purple, your paint isn't "bleeding"-it's dying. These old enamels are tough as nails, but they are incredibly thirsty for protection.

Restoration Tip

Because this is a single-stage finish, you can actually "resurrect" it-unless you've polished it down to the primer. If the color is just dull and chalky, a steady hand and a good rubbing compound can cut through that dead oxidation to reveal the vibrant Autumn Bronze hiding underneath. But here is the Salty Painter's golden rule: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've polished that surface, it is porous and completely defenseless. If you don't seal it immediately with a high-quality wax or sealant, it'll oxidize again before the next oil change. Treat it like a living thing-keep it fed, keep it sealed, and keep it out of the desert sun.
