How to Find Your 1973 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1973 Chrysler Background Info

The 1973 Chrysler Vibe

1973 was the swan song for Chrysler's legendary "Fuselage" styling. Whether you were piloting a Newport, a New Yorker Brougham, or a massive Town & Country wagon, these cars weren't just vehicles-they were land yachts with enough sheet metal to bridge the Delaware. With 18 colors in our vault, from the psychedelic remnants of the "High Impact" era to the sophisticated earth tones that defined the mid-70s, we've got the spectrum covered. You're likely looking at a lot of Tahitian Gold Poly, Amber Sherwood Poly, or the ubiquitous Honey Gold. It was a time when a car could be as brown as a cigar and still look like a million bucks.

Paint Health Check

Your 1973 Chrysler was born in the Single Stage Era. This was long before clear coats were a thing; the color and the shine were mixed into one thick layer of acrylic enamel. The legend is that this paint is bulletproof, but the reality is more "chalky." Because there's no protective clear layer, decades of UV exposure turn that deep Forest Green Poly into a flat, dusty finish that looks like it's been rolling in flour. This is classic "oxidation." If the paint feels rough to the touch or leaves a colored residue on your microfiber towel, it's starving for oils. In this era, if you don't wax it, it literally dies.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up a survivor, do not just dab paint over the "chalk." You need to "level" the oxidation first. Use a fine-cut polishing compound to remove the dead, oxidized layer until you see the actual pigment of the car again. Only then should you apply your touch-up. Since this is single-stage technology, your repair will naturally melt into the surrounding finish better than modern paints, but remember: the big C-bodies have miles of flat surface area on the hood and trunk. Keep those horizontal panels buried in a high-quality carnauba wax, or that Autumn Bronze Poly will turn back into a pumpkin before next season.
