How to Find Your 1975 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1975 Chrysler Background Info

The 1975 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to the peak of the "Personal Luxury" era, where the 1975 Cordoba and New Yorker reigned supreme. In '75, Chrysler wasn't just selling cars; they were selling "Rich Corinthian Leather" and a color palette that looked like a harvest festival exploded. With 23 colors in our database, it's clear Chrysler wanted to give you every possible shade of the 1970s. We've got the heavy hitters like Avocado Gold Poly and Spanish Gold Poly, along with the deep, moody Sienna Poly. It was an era of big bumpers, vinyl roofs, and enough "Poly" (that's Mopar-speak for metallic) to be seen from space.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back then, they didn't hide the color under a plastic-like clear coat; the pigment was right there on the surface, taking the punch from the sun every single day. The "Legend" of these old Mopars is that the paint is thick, but the reality is "The Chalk." Because these are single-stage finishes, they suffer from heavy oxidation. If your Starlight Blue Poly or Bittersweet Poly looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a luxury yacht, that's the paint literally dying of thirst. Without a clear coat to protect it, UV rays cook the oils right out of the finish, leaving behind a dry, powdery film that hides the metallic sparkle.

Restoration Tip

The beauty of 1975 paint is that it's often "resurrectable." Since there's no clear coat to peel or flake off, you can usually buff that chalk right off. Use a dedicated polishing compound to strip away the dead, oxidized top layer and reveal the fresh Inca Gold Poly underneath. But here is the hard truth: 1975 paint needs wax or it dies. Once you've polished it back to a shine, you have to seal those pores immediately. If you don't keep a thick, protective barrier on the surface, the sun will start eating the pigment again before your next car show.
