How to Find Your 1976 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1976 Chrysler Background Info

The 1976 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to 1976-the year of the Bicentennial, the 440 V8, and "Rich Corinthian Leather." If you were cruising in a Chrysler Cordoba or a New Yorker Brougham, you weren't just driving a car; you were piloting a two-and-a-half-ton living room. We've got 29 different colors in our database for this year, and let me tell you, Chrysler wasn't shy about the palette. They were leaning hard into the "Poly" (metallic) look, offering everything from the earthy Spanish Gold Poly to the bold Bittersweet Poly. It was a buffet of heavy-duty enamels designed to look as deep as a shag carpet.

Paint Health Check

Here's the cold, hard truth: we are firmly in the Single Stage Era. Back then, there was no clear coat to hide behind. The color and the protection were mixed together in one thick, heavy layer of acrylic enamel. While that sounds "bulletproof," it has a major weakness: Oxidation. If your 1976 survivor has been sitting in the sun, that Cinnamon Poly or Tropic Green probably looks like it's covered in white chalkboard dust. That's the paint literally dying and turning into powder. If you rub your finger across it and the color comes off on your skin, you're looking at a finish that's thirsty for help.

Restoration Tip

In this era, the rule is simple: It needs wax or it dies. If you're dealing with original 1976 paint, don't just start hacking away with a heavy buffer. You need to "feed" the paint first. Use a dedicated paint cleaner or a non-abrasive polish to rub away the "dead" oxidized layer and expose the fresh pigment underneath. Once you see that Spinnaker White or Inca Gold shine again, you must seal it immediately with a high-quality carnauba wax or sealant. Without that barrier, the oxygen in the air will go right back to work, turning your classic back into a chalky mess within months.
