How to Find Your 1977 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1977 Chrysler Background Info

The 1977 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to 1977, the year of the Cordoba and the "Rich Corinthian Leather" that Ricardo Montalban wouldn't stop talking about. Whether you were piloting a New Yorker Brougham or a Town & Country wagon, you weren't just driving; you were commanding a living room on wheels. With 26 colors in our vault, we've tracked down the full spectrum of the era's obsession with earth tones and heavy metallics. From the flashy Spitfire Orange and French Racing Blue to the deep, "disco-ball-at-midnight" shimmer of Black Sunfire Metallic and Vintage Red Sunfire Metallic, these weren't just paints-they were statements of intent.

Paint Health Check

Your 1977 Mopar is a product of the Single Stage Era. This was a time when the color and the protection were mixed together into one thick, honest coat of acrylic enamel. The good news? You've got a lot of pigment to work with. The bad news? This paint is "hungry." Without a clear layer on top to act as a shield, the sun treats your Jade Green Poly or Spanish Gold Poly like an all-you-can-eat buffet. If your hood looks like a dusty chalkboard or your Spinnaker White has turned into a chalky mess that rubs off on your shirt, you're looking at classic Oxidation. The paint isn't dead yet, but it's definitely suffocating.

Restoration Tip

Because this is single-stage paint, you can actually "shave" off the dead layer to reveal the fresh color underneath. If you're touching up a chip in your Inca Gold Poly, don't just dab it and walk away. For the existing paint, use a light rubbing compound to clear the oxidation first. Once you've applied your touch-up, remember the golden rule of 1977: It needs wax or it dies. Without a high-quality carnauba or sealant to act as a synthetic skin, that fresh pigment will start to chalk over again in six months. Keep it sealed, or Ricardo might come back to haunt you.
