How to Find Your 1978 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1978 Chrysler Background Info

The 1978 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to 1978, the year the Chrysler Cordoba was still whispering about "rich Corinthian leather" and the New Yorker Brougham was essentially a motorized living room. Our database is holding steady with 17 heavy hitters from this era-a time when earth tones and "Poly" finishes ruled the road. We're talking about a palette that looks like a high-end 1970s lounge: Augusta Green S/F Metallic, Spanish Gold Poly, and the undeniably smooth Jasmine Yellow. These weren't just colors; they were statements of land-yacht luxury. If you're looking at a Tapestry Red S/F Metallic survivor today, you're looking at the peak of the "Sunfire" metallic era.

Paint Health Check

Here's the cold, hard truth from the booth: You are firmly in the Single Stage Era. This was the age of thick acrylic enamels that were sprayed on and sent out. The good news? The paint has "meat" on it. The bad news? It breathes. Without a modern clear coat to seal the deal, these factory finishes are prone to Oxidation. If your Starlight Blue Poly looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a night sky, that's just dead paint sitting on the surface. The metallic flakes in those "S/F" (Sunfire) and "Poly" (Polychromatic) finishes are particularly vulnerable-once they hit the air, they oxidize and turn cloudy. It needs wax or it dies.

Restoration Tip

To bring back that 1978 luster, you have to play "Archaeologist." You need to strip away the top layer of dead, chalky oxidation to reveal the vibrant Sable S/F Metallic or Cadet Blue hiding underneath. Use a high-quality rubbing compound or a very gentle wet-sand (if you've got the steady hand for it) to "exfoliate" the paint. Once the color pops again, you must seal it immediately with a heavy-duty paste wax. Think of it as a protective skin for a finish that was never meant to survive forty years of UV rays without a little help from the person behind the buffer.
