How to Find Your 1985 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1985 Chrysler Background Info

The 1985 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to 1985, the year Lee Iacocca turned the "Van" from a utility box into the suburban "Magic Wagon." Chrysler was feeling itself this year, offering a hefty 15-color palette that perfectly bridged the gap between the fading browns of the seventies and the high-tech metallics of the future. Whether you were driving a LeBaron from "All Other Models" or hauling the kids in a Voyager, you had choices. We're talking about everything from the sophisticated Mink Brown Pearl Metallic and Desert Bronze to the sharp, executive look of Gunmetal Blue Pearl Metallic. It was a time of transition, where the wood-paneled siding of the early '80s was finally giving way to a cleaner, more "aero" aesthetic.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at an original 1985 finish today, you're likely staring at the pioneer days of the "Peeling Era." Chrysler was moving away from the thick, chalky single-stage paints and diving headfirst into basecoat/clearcoat technology. The problem? They hadn't quite mastered the chemistry yet. This era is notorious for **delamination**-that heartbreaking moment where the clear coat decides to part ways with the color underneath. If your Glacier Blue Metallic roof looks like it's sunburned and peeling in giant flakes, you aren't alone. The UV inhibitors back then weren't up to the task, and once the seal is broken, the sun literally cooks the bond between the layers until the clear lifts right off.

Restoration Tip

In this era of paint, a small rock chip isn't just a cosmetic blemish; it's an invitation for total system failure. **Seal chips immediately before the clear lifts.** Once oxygen and moisture get under that clear coat, the delamination will spread like a wildfire across your hood or roof. If you catch a chip early, clean it out and hit it with a fresh dab of color and clear to "anchor" the surrounding edges. If you wait until you see the "halo" of lifting clear, you're no longer doing a touch-up-you're looking at a full respray. Keep it sealed, keep it waxed, and keep it out of the midday sun if you want those 1985 pearls to keep their depth.
