How to Find Your 1990 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1990 Chrysler Background Info

The 1990 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to 1990, where the LeBaron GTC was the height of suburban cool and the wood-paneled Town & Country was basically a family living room on wheels. Whether you were driving an Imperial or one of the many "All Other Models" Chrysler was churning out at the dawn of the decade, the aesthetic was clear: boxy luxury and a lot of chrome. In our database, we've focused on the ultimate survivor of that era: Bright White. It was the color that defined the Chrysler fleet-clean, classic, and unfortunately, the main target for the decade's biggest paint gremlin.

Paint Health Check

If you're still rocking original paint on a '90 Chrysler, you're either a wizard or you've kept it in a climate-controlled vault. This was the peak of The Peeling Era. Chrysler was perfecting the transition to basecoat/clearcoat systems, but the early formulas didn't always play nice with the sun. We call it "delamination"-that lovely phenomenon where the clear coat decides to part ways with the base color, leaving your hood looking like it has a terminal case of sunburn. Once that clear starts to lift and turn flaky, the countdown to bare metal begins.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1990 Chrysler steel: Seal the chips immediately. Because of how these layers were bonded, a single rock chip is an invitation for air and moisture to crawl under the clear coat and start the peeling process. If you notice the clear starting to lift around a chip, don't just dab paint on top. Use a fine-grit sandpaper to gently "feather" the edges of the peeling clear until they are smooth against the base color. Only then should you apply your touch-up. This stops the "peel-o-matic" effect in its tracks and keeps your Bright White looking like a survivor rather than a project.
