How to Find Your 1996 Chrysler's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

1996 Chrysler Background Info

The 1996 Chrysler Vibe

Welcome to 1996, the peak of Chrysler's "Cab Forward" revolution. Whether you were hauling the soccer team in a Town and Country or cruising in the "All Other Models" category, you were likely wrapped in a color palette that leaned heavily on the timeless basics. By '96, the neon teals of the early 90s were fading out, leaving us with the true survivors: Black Crystal, Bright White, and the legendary Stone White. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the suburban driveway. Our database focuses on these heavy hitters because, frankly, they're the ones still standing while the experimental metallics of the era have mostly returned to the earth.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a 1996 Chrysler today, you're dealing with a survivor of "The Peeling Era." This was the decade when the industry was still perfecting the bond between the color coat and the clear coat. On these Mopars, we call it "delamination." It starts as a tiny silver bubble or a faint cloudiness on the hood or roof, and before you know it, your clear coat is flaking off in sheets like a bad sunburn after a week in Cabo. Black Crystal is particularly vulnerable to this heat-soak, while the Whites tend to hide the early stages of clear coat failure until the gloss is completely shot. If your paint looks like it's "balding," that's the clear coat giving up the ghost.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping a '96 Chrysler looking decent is edge control. In this era, clear coat failure almost always starts at a stone chip or a deep scratch. Once the seal is broken, moisture and air get between the layers and start lifting the clear from the base. My advice? Seal every tiny chip the second you see it. Use a touch-up pen to bridge that gap and lock the clear coat down to the base. If you let that "peel" start, it'll march across your fender faster than a minivan through a school zone. Seal the chips early, and you'll keep that Stone White looking like a factory finish instead of a DIY project.
