How to Find Your Chrysler Laser's Color Code

Chrysler paint codes can be difficult to find. In the good old days, they were on top of the radiator support, often hidden under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc., with the first letter as a confusing "Year Code." BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code.

The Color Breakdown

The Chrysler Laser was the ultimate 80s statement, and Chrysler gave us a massive 27 colors to prove it. They really went for it with names that sound like a synth-pop tracklist-from the high-energy San Marino Yellow and Radiant Fire to the more "refined" and slightly mysterious Rose Mist Metallic and Malacca Blue Metallic. Whether you're driving a bright yellow wedge or a deep burgundy beast, your car came from an era that wasn't afraid to stand out.

What to Watch For

Finding your paint code is the first step of your driveway quest. In the 80s, Chrysler liked to hide the "Body Code Plate" under the hood-check the top of the radiator support or the firewall. You might need a wet rag to wipe away decades of engine grime to find the three-digit code following the "PNT:" label. As for the paint itself, this era was the "Wild West" of early clear coats. You'll likely notice the paint likes to flake or "chalk" on the hood and roof where the sun hits it hardest. If the paint feels a little dry or thin, don't worry-it's just showing its age, and a little touch-up is exactly what it needs to stop that spread.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many of these Laser colors are metallic or pearl (looking at you, Fiji Blue and Rose Mist), those tiny sparkles love to settle at the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen or brush for a full 60 seconds-longer than you think you need-to wake up that metallic flake. When you apply it, think "less is more." Use the tip of the brush to dab the color into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. If it needs more, wait fifteen minutes and do a second thin layer. Patience is your best friend here!
