Once that top layer of protection fails, the basecoat underneath (like your Active Red or Midnight Blue) is basically a sitting duck for UV rays and moisture. If you see white, crusty edges around a dull patch, that's the clear coat giving up the ghost.

Restoration Tip

If you've got a small chip or a section where the clear is just starting to lift, seal it immediately. The moment moisture gets under that clear coat "shelf," it will travel, and before you know it, your entire hood is a two-tone disaster. Use a fine-grit sandpaper (around 600-800) to gently sand back the transition where the clear coat meets the bare basecoat until it's perfectly smooth to the touch.
