How to Find Your 1955 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1955 Dodge Background Info

The 1955 Dodge Vibe

1955 was the year Dodge finally stopped dressing like a bank teller and started looking like a rocket ship. This was the birth of Virgil Exner's "Forward Look," where the stubby shapes of the early '50s were traded for sweeping lines and some of the most optimistic colors to ever hit an assembly line. Whether you were cruising in a Custom Royal Lancer or a Coronet, the palette was pure mid-century glamor. We've tracked down 12 of the most iconic shades from this era, ranging from the delicate Heather Rose and Chiffon Green to the deep, metallic depth of Regal Burgundy Poly. In '55, a Dodge didn't just sit in your driveway; it performed.

Paint Health Check

You're dealing with the Single Stage Era, specifically alkyd enamels that were sprayed on thick and baked to a hard shine. These paints were tough, but they had a fatal flaw: they were "breathers." Without a modern clear coat to seal out the elements, the sun treats your Admiral Blue Poly or Cameo Red like an all-you-can-eat buffet. If your Dodge looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's not dirt-it's oxidation. The binders in the paint have broken down, leaving a chalky, dead layer of pigment on the surface. The "Poly" (metallic) colors are the most vulnerable; once that metallic flake is exposed to the air without a wax barrier, it turns gray and brittle faster than you can say "Forward Look."

Restoration Tip

If the paint is original, don't panic when you see the color coming off on your buffing pad-that's just the single-stage doing its thing. To bring back the glory of Jewell Black or Parisian Blue, you need to gently compound away that dead "chalk" layer to reveal the fresh pigment buried underneath. But hear me now: it needs wax or it dies. Once you've polished it back to a shine, you've essentially performed surgery; the surface is now raw and exposed. You must seal it with a high-quality carnauba or a heavy-duty sealant immediately to act as a sacrificial barrier. In the '50s, a Sunday morning wasn't complete without a coat of wax, and if you want that paint to last another 70 years, you'd better keep that tradition alive.
