How to Find Your 1958 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1958 Dodge Background Info

The 1958 Dodge Vibe

Welcome to the peak of Virgil Exner's "Forward Look." In 1958, Dodge wasn't just building transportation for Trucks and All Other Models; they were building land-bound rockets with fins big enough to pick up radar. This was a year of absolute chromatic confidence. We're talking about a massive palette of 27 colors that defined the era-from the workhorse Dodge Truck Red and Bell System Green to the showroom showstoppers like Klondike Yellow, Copper Poly, and the deep Sapphire Poly. If you were driving a Dodge in '58, you weren't blending in; you were making a scene in Omaha Orange or Marlin Blue.

Paint Health Check

Here's the cold, hard truth from the spray booth: we are firmly in the Single Stage Era. Back then, Dodge used a thick synthetic enamel that was tough as nails but had one major weakness-it's "thirsty." Because there's no clear coat to shield the pigment, the sun is constantly trying to turn your Sahara Beige into a literal desert of chalky oxidation. If that paint looks dull and feels like a chalkboard when you run your hand over it, that's the binder failing. The pigment is literally dying on the surface, and without an intervention, your Ponchartrain Green is going to fade into a memory.

Restoration Tip

When dealing with a 1958 survivor, remember the Golden Rule of Single Stage: It needs wax or it dies. If you're seeing that "chalky" fade, don't just sand it off. Start with a dedicated paint cleaner or a very fine polishing compound to pull that oxidation layer off and reveal the Alaska White or Silver Poly underneath. Once you've brought the shine back, you have to seal it immediately. These old enamels are porous; if you don't keep a heavy coat of high-quality wax on them, the oxidation will be back before the next oil change. Feed the paint, and it'll keep that 1958 glow for another sixty years.
