How to Find Your 1963 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1963 Dodge Background Info

The 1963 Dodge Vibe

In 1963, Dodge wasn't just building cars; they were building statement pieces. From the lean-bred Dart to the brawny D-Series Trucks and the iconic Polara, the variety was staggering. Our database alone tracks 29 distinct colors for this year-a spread that would make a modern robot-automated factory break a circuit. You had everything from the utility of National School Bus Yellow and Omaha Orange to the sophisticated shimmer of Cordovan Irid and Sandalwood Irid. Back then, if you wanted a truck in Turf Green or a sedan in Sunset Yellow, Dodge was happy to oblige with a coat of paint thick enough to stop a draft.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the **Single Stage Era**, your 1963 Dodge is wearing what we call "honest paint." There's no clear coat hiding the color-the pigment and the shine are mixed into one heavy layer of enamel or lacquer. This stuff is legendary for its durability, BUT it has a mortal enemy: oxygen. Over sixty years, that Arctic Blue or Desert Turquoise has likely developed "The Chalky Fade." This is heavy oxidation where the surface of the paint actually dies and turns into a white, powdery film. If your Dodge looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's not just dirt-it's the paint itself gasping for a breath of wax.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up a survivor, listen close: **It needs wax or it dies.** You cannot simply dab fresh paint onto sixty-year-old oxidation and expect a bond. Before you pick up the brush, you have to "exfoliate." Use a light rubbing compound to strip away that chalky layer until the true Marlin Blue or Toreador Red starts to peek through again. Once you've hit solid pigment, apply your touch-up. And for the love of the Fratzog, keep a coat of carnauba wax on that body. Without a clear coat to shield it, the wax is the only thing standing between your paint and the relentless march of the atmosphere.
