How to Find Your 1964 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1964 Dodge Background Info

The 1964 Dodge Vibe

1964 was a hell of a year for Mopar. You had the D-Series trucks earning their keep on the job site and "All Other Models"-from the lean Dart to the heavy-hitting Polara-tearing up the new interstate system. Dodge wasn't shy about the palette either; we've got 25 colors in our vault for '64. Whether your rig was sporting the celebratory shimmer of Anniversary Gold Poly, the deep punch of Toreador Red, or the workhorse grit of Dodge Truck Red, these cars were built to stand out. It was an era of "Poly" metallics and bold turquoises like Desert Turquoise that looked just as good at the drive-in as they did in a showroom.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Single Stage Era. Back in '64, they didn't believe in the "clear coat sandwich" we see today. This is honest, thick acrylic enamel. The good news? It doesn't peel or delaminate like the junk from the 90s. The bad news? It suffers from the "Chalky Death." If your Dark Blue Poly or Pine Green looks like it was scrubbed with a blackboard eraser, that's oxidation. Without a clear layer to protect it, the sun literally eats the binder out of the pigment, leaving a dull, powdery film on the surface. If you let it go too long, the paint doesn't just look bad-it becomes porous, inviting the real enemy: rust.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1964 steel is simple: It needs wax or it dies. Before you touch up a chip with our solvent-based match, you've got to get past that chalk. Use a light rubbing compound to strip away the oxidized layer until the true color of the Medium Turquoise Poly peaks through. Once your repair is cured and leveled, you have to seal it. These old single-stage paints stay alive because of the oils in the finish; keep it waxed regularly to block out the oxygen and UV rays. Do that, and you'll keep that 1964 shine alive for another sixty years.
