How to Find Your 1966 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1966 Dodge Background Info

The 1966 Dodge Vibe

1966 was the year Dodge decided to stop playing nice. While the Coronet and Dart were holding down the streets, the first-generation Charger arrived with those hidden headlights and a fastback that looked like it was doing a hundred miles an hour while parked in a driveway. Dodge didn't just give you a car; they gave you a choice of 21 different ways to make the neighbors stare. We're talking about a palette that ranged from the sophisticated Silver Mist Poly and Mauve Poly to the "look-at-me" punch of Bright Red and Yellow. If you couldn't find a color you liked in '66, you weren't looking.

Paint Health Check

Back in '66, we weren't messing around with "layers" or "depth"-we shot Single Stage Acrylic Enamel. It was thick, it was tough, and the color went all the way through. But here's the rub: because there's no clear coat standing guard, your paint is essentially "naked" to the elements. If your Dark Turquoise Poly or Bronze Poly looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's Oxidation. The sun's UV rays are literally cooking the binders in the paint, leaving behind a chalky, dead residue. Those "Poly" (metallic) colors are the most sensitive; those tiny aluminum flakes are sitting right near the surface, and once they start to oxidize, the shine vanishes faster than a Hemi at a green light.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up or buffing out an original 1966 finish, don't panic when your microfiber towel or applicator pad turns the exact shade of Medium Blue Poly. On a single-stage car, that's not a mistake-it's progress. You're physically removing the dead, oxidized layer to reveal the fresh pigment underneath. But remember: once you've polished it back to a mirror finish, you've just thinned out the "skin" of the car. It needs wax or it dies. Without a high-quality sealant or carnauba wax to act as a sacrificial barrier, that chalky fade will be back before the next oil change. Treat the wax like a shield, or prepare to watch your hard work turn back into a chalkboard.
