How to Find Your 1971 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1971 Dodge Background Info

The 1971 Dodge Vibe

1971 was the absolute high-water mark for "loud and proud" in the Dodge catalog. Whether you were hauling drywall in a D-Series truck or terrorizing the local strip in a Charger, Chrysler wasn't afraid to spray a car in colors that looked like they belonged in a neon sign. With 45 colors in our vault from this year, it's a verified rainbow of High-Impact madness. We're talking about legendary hues like Citron Yella, Panther Pink, Green Go, and Plum Crazy. This was the era where your vehicle didn't just have a paint job; it had an attitude that could be heard from three blocks away.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Single Stage Era. Back in '71, Dodge wasn't bothering with a separate clear coat to hide their work; the pigment and the protection were mixed into one thick, honest layer of acrylic enamel. The legend is that this paint is bulletproof, BUT that's only true if you keep it out of the sun. Without a modern clear coat to act as a shield, these old Mopar finishes are prone to "Oxidation"-that dreaded chalky, dull fade that makes your hood look like it was dusted with flour. Because the pigment is exposed directly to the air, it's literally breathing itself to death. If you see white residue on your buffing pad, don't panic; that's just the old girl giving up a layer of herself to get her shine back.

Restoration Tip

Here is the golden rule for 1971 steel: It needs wax or it dies. Since you're working with single-stage paint, you actually have a unique advantage-you can "rub" the life back into it. If the paint is looking chalky, a gentle polishing compound can strip away the dead, oxidized top layer to reveal the fresh Citron Yella or Hemi-Orange hiding underneath. But once you get that shine back, you have to seal the deal immediately. Use a high-quality carnauba wax or a sealant to give those exposed pigments a fighting chance against the sun. If you leave it "naked" after polishing, it'll be back to chalk by next summer.
