How to Find Your 1975 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1975 Dodge Background Info

The 1975 Dodge Vibe

Welcome to 1975-the year Dodge decided that if the engines had to be choked by smog pumps, the paint jobs at least deserved to be loud. Whether you were hauling drywall in a D-Series Truck or buzzing through the gas lines in a Colt, Dodge gave you a staggering 47 ways to express yourself. This was the peak of "Earth Tone Fever." We're talking a dizzying spectrum of metallics and "Polys" like Avocado Gold Poly, Bittersweet Poly, and Aztec Gold Poly. If it looked like it belonged on a shag carpet or a kitchen appliance, Dodge sprayed it on a fender. It was a glorious, high-pigment era where "subtle" wasn't in the vocabulary, but "Poly" certainly was.

Paint Health Check

You're dealing with the Single Stage Era, kid. Back then, we didn't bury the color under a plastic-looking clear coat; the gloss and the pigment were all mixed into one thick, honest layer of enamel. The good news? It doesn't "peel" like a bad sunburn. The bad news? It "chalks." If you walk past your Deep Sherwood Poly Charger, brush against the quarter panel, and your sleeve turns green, you're looking at Oxidation. That's the paint literally dying and turning into dust because the sun has cooked the oils right out of it. Without a clear coat to take the hit, the color itself is on the front lines against the UV rays.

Restoration Tip

In this era, wax is life. If that Sienna Poly finish is looking like a chalkboard, don't panic-there's usually plenty of "meat" left on the bone because single-stage was sprayed thick. You need to carefully polish away that top layer of dead, oxidized paint to reveal the fresh pigment underneath. But once you find that shine, you've got to seal it. These old-school enamels are porous; if you don't keep a high-quality wax or sealant on them, they'll start fading again before the next oil change. It needs a coat of protection or it dies-simple as that.
